- Public Holidays
The United States of America recognizes many holidays, both religious and non-religious, throughout the year. Some are celebrated nationally, while others are recognized in certain states only. In total, there are ten official federal holidays, which means that all non-essential government offices and most private sector businesses are closed1. The two largest globally celebrated days are Christmas Day and New Year's Day2. The two largest secular, uniquely American holidays are the Fourth of July, which celebrates the date America gained independence from the United Kingdom, and Thanksgiving, which is a day to reflect on the founding of America and to give thanks23.
There are many other holidays which are not widely recognized and are specific to certain states, mainly for historical reasons4. In addition, there are many unofficial holidays, where celebrations and traditions may take place, but government offices, schools, and private businesses are still open.
