Moon gardening FAQ

How do I use this moon gardening calendar?
For each date, start with the day type shown in the calendar: fruit, leaf, flower, or root. Then check the lunar phase, the ascending or descending Moon, and any unfavorable periods. Taken together, these indications help decide whether the day is better suited to sowing, planting, pruning, working the soil, or harvesting.
What is a moon gardening calendar?
It is a gardening calendar that associates each date with recommendations based on lunar rhythms. It combines the Moon phase, the Moon's ascending or descending path, its position in the zodiac constellations, and special configurations such as lunar nodes, perigee, apogee, and eclipses.
What do waxing and waning Moon mean?
The Moon is waxing from new moon to full moon, as the visible illuminated part grows. It is waning from full moon to the next new moon. In lunar gardening, the waxing phase is traditionally linked with above-ground growth, while the waning phase is linked with rooting, consolidation, and stability.
What do ascending and descending Moon mean?
The ascending Moon is the period when the Moon appears higher in the sky from one day to the next. In moon gardening, it is considered favorable for sowing, harvesting, grafting, and work involving the aerial parts of plants. During the descending Moon, gardeners usually prioritize planting, transplanting, pruning, cuttings, and soil work.
What are fruit, root, flower, and leaf days?
In biodynamic gardening, the Moon's passage through the constellations is associated with four elements and four plant families. Fruit/seed, root, flower, and leaf days are each considered more favorable for a plant family or for the part of the plant you want to sow, tend, or harvest.

Why can one date show several day types?
Moon phases, the Moon's path, constellation passages, and calendar days do not follow the same rhythm. Because these cycles are out of sync, a single calendar date can change day type partway through the day or include an unfavorable period.
Which days are considered unfavorable?
Lunar or solar eclipses, lunar nodes, perigee, and apogee are usually treated as periods to avoid in moon gardening calendars. Even when the astronomical event happens at a precise time, many lunar gardening calendars block the whole day and discourage vegetable-garden work.
Is moon gardening scientifically proven?
No. These practices, largely inherited from biodynamics, are not scientifically validated. Soil quality, water availability, temperature, sunlight, and pest management remain far more important than the lunar cycle. That said, many biodynamic practices still encourage soil care and environmentally respectful gardening.
